6 Business Reasons To Upgrade Away From XP

April 8th 2014 was the last day of Microsoft support for its iconic operating system Windows XP. Microsoft will no longer provide hot fixes, product updates, technical support, and—most importantly—security updates. If you are still relying on this loyal and obedient servant to your business, it is high time you switched to another OS (Operating System) with many alternatives available to you. This is because your operating system will become potentially insecure and though there will be occasional anti malware updates from Microsoft for few months, it is better to start planning on a long-term basis. However, it is not all about potential threats to your business as you also stand to gain a lot by upgrading to another Windows OS from Windows XP.

1. XP will be a relic soon

Microsoft launched Windows XP 13 years ago in August 2001. That was a time with very simple features and specifications of computers and XP looked great on a screen that had only 640 pixels in it. There were no smartphones, laptops were a luxury and no one had heard about tablets. Technology has leaped forward in the last 13 years and XP has somehow managed to trudge along with all the fixes and band-aids. You can still use XP for your business but keep in mind that it was made for a time with much less security related issues than we are facing today.

2. Security of your documents and files are in jeopardy

There is no use remaining in a false sense of security when you can easily upgrade to a modern OS with much more convenience and new features than XP. Microsoft will soon abandon Windows XP and if there are any flaws discovered by hackers afterwards, you can never hope to get them fixed. XP is outdated and it is time to accept this sad reality. It may have been a great OS but 13 years is like an eon in the world of technology. Its design and performance is not suited to the fast computers of today with quad core processors and solid RAMs.

3. Newer OS can enhance productivity

Switching from Windows XP to another newer OS is fruitful for your business from productivity point of view also. There are new operating systems that allow you to work far more efficiently than XP because of their new and enhanced features. Aero Snap is one such feature in Windows 7 that allows for much better and efficient organization of windows on the screen. You will realize how much time you wasted by dragging windows in XP when you use Aero Snap for a short time.

4. Latest version of Office cannot run on Windows XP

Microsoft Office is a productivity software package that includes popular tools such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.  Over 85% of today's businesses are using Microsoft Office.  Like other software packages, there is a new version of Office every few years, while older versions are fading out like Office 2003. The newest released of this popular productivity tool is Office 2013. While you still can run Office 2010 on XP, in order to run Office 2013 you need at least a Windows 7 machine. This is yet another reason that makes business sense to upgrade away from XP.

5. Less maintenance issues with newer OS

Maintenance becomes a breeze with a newer Windows version while it takes a lot of time and effort when you are using XP.  You are not required to update the OS or carry out diagnostic tests for the maintenance of your OS once you have switched to Windows 7, 8 or 8.1 that does it all in an automatic manner.

6. New devices and software work seamlessly with upgrades

You become handicapped when using new devices and peripherals such as USB devices, printers and scanners as they all designed to work with new and advance operating systems.

Yes, they are backward compatible, such as USB 3.0 that will still work with Windows XP but at a much reduced speed and efficiency than you would prefer to have. Most independent software companies will no longer spend their time and resources to support an outdated OS. This means loss of time and efficiency for your business in more ways than one.

How to go forward with the migration to new Windows operating system?
